Speaking Feedback Date : 6. 7, 2016 Speaker: Suh Dong Hyeon Evaluator: JungMin Lee Title : Life saving instructions (in a nuclear explosion) 1. What strong points does the speaker have? The materials that he used for the presentation (powerpoint, audio file) proved that he spent time and efforts for the preparation. Also the speech topic itself was very interesting and it was well organized. The speed of his speech was constant and it was very comfortable to listen to. 2. How well did the audience get to know the speech subject? The speaker had an interesting opening which helped us know what the topic is really about. After that he explained each stages very clearly. 3. Did the speech reflect adequate preparation? Yes. Both the visual aid (powerpoint) and the audio file used in the beginning proved that he was very well prepared and the speech was very well organized as well. He also tried a lot to make eye contacts constantly. 4. Did the speaker talk clearly and audibly? The speaker spoke clearly and it was audible. The general speed of the speech was good too. However, the general tone of the speech was somewhat monotonous. 5. Did the speech have a definite opening, body, and conclusion? Yes. The speech was organized with an interesting introduction, body and a conclusion. The opening was very interesting and body was clear with a lot of information, and the way he ended his speech with a quote was very interesting.. 6. Please comment on the speaker's use of notes/eye contact. I could see that he tried his best to look at the audience. He looked at his notes sometimes, but it was not a big problem. 7. What could the speaker have done differently that would have improved the speech? His general tone was somewhat monotonous, so working on the general tone, and thinking about fluency would improve his presentation. Also, it would’ve been better if he mentioned why he chose this topic (The “Why you?” part). 8. What did you like about the presentation? The topic was interesting, and the general organization of the speech was great (I really like the opening!). He was also very well prepared, with powerpoint, audio file, and memorization.

1. What strong points does the speaker have?
You seem to have deep knowledge regarding weaponry, nuclear weapons in particular. The topic, surviving from nuclear weapon was interesting. Also, you used not only visual aids but also audio for better understanding.
2. How well did the audience get to know the speech subject?
Surviving from a nuclear weapon seems to be an interesting topic. I presume not many people would know how to survive from a nuclear attack.
3. Did the speech reflect adequate preparation?
Even though you often referred to your notes, you seem to have adequate information to explain how to survive from nuclear attack. Furthermore, you prepared the powerpoint and audio for your presentation.
4. Did the speaker talk clearly and audibly?
The tone you convey your presentation is easy to understand. Also, the overall intonation and pronunciation is not difficult to follow. Yet, there are often wrong pronunciations and accents. Also, some parts, such as the word you say in 1:12, and the terminology you used when saying atomic bomb was difficult to comprehend. You used microphone, but your voice seems comparatively small to hear.
5. Did the speech have a definite opening, body, and conclusion?
Your presentation had opening, body, and conclusion.
6. Please comment on the speaker’s use of notes/eye contact.
As time passes by, you looked at your notes more frequently. You do make eye contacts, but you often look at the powerpoint or the screen too much and have less eye contacts in the end.
7. What could the speaker have done differently that would have improved the speech?
Using visual aids was very helpful, but most of the photos in your powerpoint are too small. Your presentation must have been better if you made photos bigger, while reducing the number of sentences. Also, playing the audio and then directly continuing your presentation seemed abrupt. You could have explained about the audio more. You could have made your voice louder to make your presentation more audible. Furthermore, it could have been much better when you memorised Julius Robert Oppenheimer's words. This could have been a point you could emphasise and leave an impact. For the same reason, your presentation could have been much more impressive if you stressed the ending part of your presentation. If you have memorised your script further and relied less on notes while making more eye contacts, your presentation could have been much more interesting. Personally, it would have been better if you explained why radioactive ashes and being contaminated by radioactivity are harmful. I would have to say you would have to concern more about time management.
8. What did you like about the presentation?
The topic of your presentation was interesting. Also, your voice and attitude did not seem nervous. The pace of your presentation was adequate to understand your presentation. Thank you for your presentation.
